World should provide more assistance, says Canadian MP
LAHORE: Member of Canadian Parliament Jim Kerry Jiannes asked the international community to try to provide the October 8 earthquake victims with more assistance.
Delay in this regard could result in more deaths, he said while addressing a press conference at the Lahore Press Club on Tuesday. He said that the international community had tried its best to help the victims, but the damage that had been done meant that more help was needed. “It is a race against time because the winter season can claim more lives in the affected areas, if the victims are not helped,” he said.
Jim said that he had visited Pakistan several times and he knew that tents would be of no use in the winter. Tents could only provide temporary shelter and when snow started falling, proper shelter would be required, he added. He said that during his visit to the affected areas, he met several people who were not ready to leave because their property was their only asset, therefore it was better to help them rebuild their houses.
The MP said that his country had provided victims with 57 million Canadian dollars and Canadians were raising more funds to help victims. app
